What is Physiatry?
Physiatry - also called Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation - is a branch of medicine that specializes in diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal and neurologic disease using non-surgical treatments. A physiatrist seeks to restore normal function and improve quality of life for patients from a physical, emotional, psychosocial and vocational perspective.
- The physiatrists at NeuroSpine Center of Wisconsin treat a wide range of problems that affect the musculoskeletal system, including:
- Low back pain, buttock pain, hip pain, and sciatica
- Neck and arm pain
- Acute muscle and ligament injuries
- Acute and chronic pain
- Work injuries
- Myofascial pain
Physiatrists take a thorough medical history of the patient, perform a complete physical exam, and pursue further testing if necessary including laboratory testing, x-rays, MRI scans, electromyography and nerve conduction studies, and psychological testing.
- The treatments offered may include:
- Medications
- Active physical and occupational therapy
- Passive physical therapy (heat, cold, massage, electrotherapy)
- Spinal injections
- Injections to ligaments, muscles, bursae, and joints
- Bracing and assistive devices
- Psychologic counseling
