The small joints of the spine, called facet joints, frequently cause spine pain. Facet rhizotomy is an outpatient procedure, which cauterizes the nerves which transmit pain signals from the facets to the brain; the painful facet joints are made numb by this procedure. The procedure, when effective, lasts an average of 6-18 months, and can be repeated if the facet joints become painful again.
