An EMG tests the function of nerves in the upper and/or lower extremities. In the first part of the test, specific nerves are stimulated, and their electrical response is recorded on the skin. In the second part of the test, fine wires are inserted into selected muscles to record the natural electrical energy present in the muscles.
An EMG can help to determine if a nerve is pinched or irritated, or if muscle disease is present.
